Artmaking…

"The reasons you have for doing what you're doing are probably the most important aspect of your work. It's not about the final product. In fact, too much emphasis on the outcome blinds you to what is really at the bottom of it all." — Gregori Bresaz

Ancient Corners of Spain

Ancient Corners of Spain

Santiago de Compostela

In 1997 I walked five hundred miles from Saint Jean Pied-de-Port in southwest France to the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. While walking I visited many Cathedrals, churches, monasteries and other places of worship with varying degrees of grandeur. Often I found that I was more drawn to the energy in the out of the way forgotten corners of a place rather than the main or central alter where I was expected to focus my attention. It may have been that the place of central focus was too prepared or manicured with the objective of drawing my attention to it but instead I was inspired to examine the less important areas of the architecture. For whatever reason, I found that I had little interest in photographing the alters that were so carefully arranged and expecting my appreciation and instead found myself with a photographic collection of forgotten unattended corners where the energy was far more intense for me. A few of these photographs are presented in this post. (For an illustrated narrative of my pilgrimage see Walking Through Shadows.)
